Same as the earlier session, pretty much. I made a couple of great calls (if I do sau so myself) against a guy who liked to bluff at me, but also made some bad value bets against a different guy. Overall, a decent session.

Preflop is fairly standard, although I'd favour a raise from him (and not posting oop so early) if he's going to play from there with that. His flop play is also fairly standard if a bit passive. I don't like the flop because of the clubs, naturally, although I would struggle to give credit for a flopped flush. It's when the board pairs on the end and he shoves the river for slightly more than the pot that I get really confused. If he's thinking at all, he clearly doesn't see me flopping a full house. I had been quite aggressive at the flop up to now, although I don't think I'd shown down any aggressive draws today (maybe one, might have been the other table). He also has little chance of repping a queen (anything that calls a fourflush there calls a queen). I'd have to conclude he only saw his flush and decided to get it all in.

This hand bugged me a little bit. Pretty sure I'm beat more often than nor (villain had been pretty quiet, which sometimes means he's bored but, with the aggression he's showing, I'd say he probably has me with either a big pair or A9)

Obviously, when I call pre, that flop is exactly what I want. The only overcard is small, and the rest of the cards are badly coordinated at best. I think my raise on the flop is too small to do very much except throw money away (maybe it chases out AJ, AT). I have to let it go when he comes over the top. That min-bet makes me think he's very strong.

In pretty much every other hand I knew what was going on. I tried to be very tight preflop (fewer steals and speculative raises with TJ, 89 etc.) and it seemed to work. I got into some trouble late on with TT and 99, but I think it was fairly standard stuff (TT was minimal, 99 I probably should've dropped preflop to a raise on my bet, but in a three way full-stacked pot I figured the implied was there on my set). I feel very happy about the way I played (although much of this might be because I won nearly two full buy-ins. Who can tell?)

12+1 SH MTT

Opening Bankroll: $128.51

Number of runners: 18
Finish: 3rd
Cash: $43.20

Closing Bankroll: $158.71

That was a lot of fun. Which is what I went in looking for, especially given that this was outside my bankroll and tourney/SH skill/experience level. The structure was great, my stack was in the 70-150BB range most of the time, until the late levels (although I was in the top four of chips most of the time, the average stack was still in the 40-50BB range a lot). Maybe Party has made me hate tourneys more than I should.

I won a couple of lucky spots (A8s vs. ATo and... two overs vs. a pair on the flop, I think) but lost a couple as well, so luck wasn't a huge factor (although it's lucky to win the early all in and lose the late flip for 15% of your stack). Once we hit the final three I went for broke intending to go heads up in top gear with great chips (three way was roughly 13K, 7.5K (me), 6.5K) and the shorty proved better at it than me (and more willing to tangle with the big stack). I ended up with broke. Well, $43 to make up for the cash madness.

Lost a full buy in going all-in with QQ and losing to AQ when the board made quad kings.

Lost most of another buy in with QQ when I went all in and got called by KJo.

After that, I struggled to catch anything good. Until I found some more queens and my opponent found kings. Those three were all on the same table.

The other table was just boring. I overplayed 22 and that cost me quite considerably, but other than that I didn't do anything very bad. I got a bit tilty when the queens messed up on the other table (the first two were very close together). Most of my losses were due to bad luck which is annoying as there's nothing I can do about it.

All things considered, not a great session. I'd really like to post a winning one soon. It's highly infuriating to know I could've pulled three buy-ins out if the deck had been good, or even two if the deck hadn't screwed me over. But as it is I left three buy-ins down and that hurts.

.05/.10 NLH LH 27/9/07

Starting Balance: $159.16

Buy In: 10 + 10 (2 tables)
No. of Hands: 263
Left With: 4 + 15.25

Closing Balance: $158.41

Running totals: +623ptbb/2809

Both tables started off fairly well, with the eventual winning table going great. I played fairly solid, only making sensible bluffs and semi bluffs where I thought I was in with a good shot of winning. At one point, I had around $15 and $26, but it all went downhill after that.

The losing table, I slipped to about $6 on bad flops and a couple of misfiring bluffs (although two of those I got called on the turn and was ahead until the guy hit the river). Standard stuff really. Preflop was still good, so that's fine (I may have been overly cautious with some marginal hands, but I wasn't getting much respect). The other $2 went on trying to recoup my losses, so I ran out while I still had some money as I was starting to get wound up.

Winning table went shit on one hand that cost me about $10. With JQs on 6x4sTs9x board, villain reraised all in for $5 into a $13 pot and I called. He'd been showing unusual strength all the way, so I figured I had flush and straight draws at a minimum (15 outs), with possibly more against something like AT or JJ. He flipped AKs leaving me with still 12 outs ( slightly bad call, but not disastrous) and that was the end of that chapter.

At times like these, when I've had the opportunity to walk away from a table with two buy-ins under my belt, I often feel like I should have just stood up (even if I then sit back down somewhere else). Really that's only protectionism and it's not a profitable strategy (sort of like the donk-and-run). Last night and this morning have convinced me that I can beat this level solidly (even without having played for a long time) so I know the money is coming back to my account eventually. Just sucks to have recorded a losing session as the first one back on the trail.

Sod The Fancy Crap

So...

My attempts to be all zero to hero backfired in fantastic style. I have nothing left at Party, but I had a little at Stars, so I reloaded and built my roll back to where it was before the summer. In other words, my stats now stand at:

Balance: $159.16
.05/.10 NLH LH: +630ptbb/2546
+$63.06 /2546

I'll be keeping the same stats and everything even though I'll be playing at Stars rather than Party. Continuing to two or sometimes three table up to 20K hands. One difference between the two sites is that Party was ten handed whereas Stars is nine handed. Not sure that'll mean much, except possibly more hands per hour, which can only be a good thing, I suppose.

I played a bit earlier (although didn't record anything from it). I won about $10 from 200-300 hands, using a fairly laggy style (seeing a lot of flops and betting everything) as I thought I might be able to outplay the villains. I did get pretty lucky from time to time, although I think I deserved most of what I won. Also played a multitable where I was in great shape near the second break when some clown with a monster stack called my reraise all in with 8cTc (possible to argue he was pot commited, but not really. More likely he just wanted to be a big stack bully). Needless to say my kings got screwed.

I'm looking forward to getting back in the game. It's been a while.

10+1 NLH SNG 13/9/07

Opening balance: $29

SNGs entered: 2
Finishing positions: 5th (1), 4th (1)
Prize money: 0

Closing balance: $7

First SNG: Finished 5th. I never got much going on with this one, which happens from time to time. A couple of early moves I tried to make got shot down by proper-handed people (although at least I got away from my moves this time) leaving me with about 1150. I sat and waited for good cards (most of this time, the table was too long for me to want to get clever) and ended up pushing with 99 with about 900 over a raise to 180. Guy calls, flips Queens, flops a set and it's all over bar the crying.

Second SNG: My creativity paid off more on this table. With 7 left I had around 8K in front of me, but I lost a big all-in with KK vs. AQ that dropped me to 5K. The new chip leader became very aggressive and I was content to now wait for the big hands (especially as, with 6 left, we were in the period where I feel the SNG tilts and it's all very up in the air, especially for a middle stack). We reached the crapshoot stage with five of us left, blinds at 200/400. I held a small chip lead with just over 5K, but really I wanted to just hang on over the bubble (especially when the fifth place guy crashed out quickly). I bubbled in the end, leaving me with no cash in the account at all. Boo!

I need to come up with a new plan.

10+1 NLH SNG 12/9/07

Opening balance: $62

SNGs entered: 3
Finishing positions: 10th (1), 9th (2)
Prize money: 0

Closing balance: $29

First SNG: horrible bust out. Four way pot in the BB with 46o. Flop comes J46r. I check, there's a bet behind to 160, a call, SB folds and I make it 560. Original raiser folds, caller calls. Turn is an icky 7, I check, he checks. River is a Q, I bet about 240 with 600 behind as a block. He reraises all in and I call. He flips QJ for a river suckout (although I think his play on the flop-turn was more likely to be a straight or a draw, maybe a set, than a stray Jack (since a jack wouldn't be strong enough to stand up to that much pressure normally). So i didn't play it very well and maybe got what I deserved, but I still feel cheated. Perfect.

Second SNG: I won an early coin flip (AJ from the button versus a seemingly loose guy preflop pushing with 55) which gave me the freedom to be more aggressive than in the other tourney. Then I played one utter donkey hand where I was too aggressive with top pair on a board that gave me every chance to escape and ended up losing to a flopped set. Bah.

So I think I need to get my head back into the game a lot more. I know how to win SNGs, and I can certainly do a lot better than this. So I foolishly opened a third SNG even though I'm clearly not in a good frame of mind for this. (I'm playing it while I type this, which also isn't helping). I ended up going all in with AQ and getting called by two guys with 99 and JJ. I lost.

So my bankroll is now tiny. I won't lose too much sleep over it, but I really would like to put some money back in to my account. A couple of good finishes will get me back on track.

It's Been A While

Since my last post, I basically haven't played. I had to withdraw all the money from my Party account and was basically prepared to not play online any more. Then in August I received an email from Party saying they were giving me $75 free (obviously subject to release conditions). I played some $10+1 SNGs with it and now have $62 (after they took the original $75 off me for not meeting the release requirements.

I'm still treating this as a bit of a game right now. I'll keep playing the 10+1s for now, until I get back to around $160 like I had before. If I get back to that point, I'll return to micro-stakes cash and go back to becoming a better player.
